Ford Drops the Top on 2008 Shelby GT-H Mustang

PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Ford Shelby GT-H coupe Rent-a-Racer program launched in 2006 was such a hit that the company was determined to follow it up with another smash. And so sun seekers will be able to get their hands on the Shelby GT-H convertible this year at select airport locations around the country.

The Shelby GT-H convertible will be on display at the 2007 New York Auto Show. Ford said the first convertible GT-H sold for $250,000 at Saturday's Barrett-Jackson Auction in West Palm Beach, Florida. Proceeds from that sale will benefit the Carroll Shelby Children's Foundation.

Like its sibling, the 2008 convertible gets black exterior paint with gold Le Mans racing stripes and Shelby GT-H rocker stripes. Other exterior touches include a unique hood with pins and a brushed aluminum grille with a running-horse emblem. The cabin gets a numbered dash badge with Carroll Shelby's signature.

The Shelby GT-H convertible has a 319-horsepower 4.6-liter V8 and a five-speed automatic transmission. It includes the Ford Racing Handling Pack with special-tuned dampers, lowered springs, sway bars and strut tower brace.

"The Ford Shelby GT-H was so much fun to drive that people literally begged us for more," said Carroll Shelby, CEO of Shelby Automobiles.

The Shelby GT-H Mustang convertible will be available at airports with the Hertz Fun Collection including Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Denver, Maui, Honolulu and Las Vegas.

The Shelby GT-H Mustang coupes are being retired from the Hertz fleet and are in the process of being auctioned off to Ford dealers. The automaker reports that some of the coupes are selling "in the range of $60,000 to $90,000."
