VW Neeza Crossover Concept Preps for Debut

BEIJING — Shanghai Volkswagen will unveil a crossover concept at the Beijing auto show, Auto China 2006, next week.


Meanwhile, sketches of the car, called the Neeza, are already circulating on the Internet.

Shanghai Volkswagen has released a very carefully worded press release that reveals next to nothing. But it does say that the name Neeza comes from ancient Chinese mythology and conveys the message of extraordinary power — and that the concept was painted red to highlight that it is a Chinese car.

The Neeza is intended to demonstrate the capabilities of local designers and engineers. The company also says this concept is the first step toward making Shanghai Volkswagen a company with its own independent design team, not just a manufacturing enterprise.

VW said some elements of the Neeza may appear on future Shanghai Volkswagen models.
