2008 BMW 5 Series
BMW has updated its 2008 5 Series with mild interior and exterior changes, powertrain improvements for six-cylinder models and a few assorted technology upgrades. The 5 Series goes on sale this month, starting at $45,075 for the 528i sedan. Price includes a $775 destination charge.
The '08 face-lift includes a revised front fascia, new taillights, a new rear air diffuser on sedan models and a freshened cabin with more leather and wood trim. The standard iDrive adds six programmable memory buttons that can be used for radio station presets or navigation destinations.
BMW said the 5 Series lineup will include five six-cylinder models and one V8 model. The 528i sedan gets a 3.0-liter N52 inline-6 engine that makes 230 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 200 pound-feet of torque at 2,750 rpm. That is an increase of 15 hp and 15 lb-ft of torque over the outgoing 525i. The 535i sedan has a new optional sport automatic transmission that includes steering-wheel paddle shifters plus a sport button for quicker, more dynamic shifting. A sport package on the 535i includes 18-inch wheels and tires in staggered width, marking the first time such a feature has been offered on six-cylinder models, the automaker said.
A top-of-the line 2008 BMW 550i sedan starts at $59,275, including destination. BMW said it sold 56,756 5 Series vehicles in the U.S. in 2006.
