GMC Pad Snags L.A. Vehicle Design Challenge
The GMC Pad — a "living activity vehicle" loaded with entertainment, information, and security options — won the 2006 Design Los Angeles Vehicle Design Challenge on Thursday.
The concept features a diesel-electric hybrid system that also serves as a generator for the onboard power grid. It was lauded by the judges for creating "a new segment between the RV and the SUV."
"We chose this vehicle because it was the pinnacle of creativity," said Stewart Reed, chairman of Transportation Design for the Art Center College of Design. "All the entrants were fantastic designs, but this design was the one which took the biggest risk."
The Pad competed against such entrants as the Audi Nero, the Hyundai Gator, and the Maybach California Gourmet Tourer. All of the designs, which showcase trends in Southern California, will be on display during the L.A. show.
