Chrysler Aussie Skunkworks Erupts With Hot E490 Charger
MELBOURNE, Australia — Sure, it's got a Hemi. But the Chrysler 300C SRT8, nicknamed E490, has something more: a bit of loving care from a bunch of Chrysler employees in Mulgrave, Australia. It was unveiled at the Melbourne auto show here.
The new model is the workers' homage to a 1970s muscle car Chrysler had in Australia, also made in-house. Called the E49 Charger, it featured a 302-horsepower six-cylinder engine good for an honest 0-100-mph time of 14.1 seconds.
The new E490 was named in honor of the old model. It gets new air induction and exhaust systems, a bespoke stereo system courtesy of Alpine, 20-inch alloy wheels and tinted windows.
Chrysler was quick to point out that the car is not for sale yet, but if reaction is good an E490 package should retail for the equivalent of U.S. $8,500.
