Range Rover Vogue Security Vehicle and Rolls-Royce Phantom Armoured Hit the Streets
GOODWOOD, England — The gold standard with most armored vehicles is to make them look indistinguishable from their more conventional counterparts. That's why you really can't tell that the new armored version of the Rolls-Royce Phantom is any different from the run-of-the-mill Phantom.
Rolls-Royce said the Phantom Armoured powertrain is the same, providing 453 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque. The car features high-tech fiber composites and special-purpose steel to provide protection for the body. The greenhouse is made from sheets of thickened glass. The Phantom's aluminum space-frame chassis and suspension components have been strengthened to handle the weight of the modifications.
The high-security Range Rover Vogue will be available in four levels of security, the first three offering protection from "attack by handgun, assault rifle or high-velocity rifle," the automaker said. The ultimate version protects against such weapons as the Kalashnikov AK-47 rifle and is "favored by Heads of State and other diplomatic, political and religious 'targets,' " the automaker said.
Range Rover said the thickness of the glass — up to 40mm (1.6 inches) thick — is the only visual external clue to this vehicle.
