2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2
NEW YORK — Volkswagen has unveiled its 2008 Touareg 2, which gets a freshened exterior and two updated engines. The Touareg 2 will go on sale later this spring with a sticker price of $40,000, including a $680 destination charge. The 2007 Touareg started at $38,790, including shipping.
The VR6 FSI and V8 FSI engines are upgraded for 2008. VW said the Touareg's 3.2-liter VR6 has been replaced with a more powerful 280-horsepower 3.6-liter VR6 FSI, an increase of 40 horses. The upgraded 4.2-liter V8 FSI generates 350 horses, 40 more than the previous V8. Touareg 2's 5.0-liter V10 twin turbo delivers 310 hp and 553 pound-feet of torque.
The mildly tweaked Touareg 2 gets a chrome front grille, redesigned rear spoiler and 17-inch alloy wheels on the base model. Four new exterior choices include Alaska Gray, Cranberry, Galapagos and White Gold.
On the tech side, the Touareg 2 gets a new rollover sensor system, an enhanced tire-pressure monitoring system and "ABSplus" braking. This system shortens braking distance for the Touareg 2 by up to 20 percent on loose road beds by pushing a portion of the road material under temporarily locked wheels to form a chock, VW said. It described the innovation as "the first of its kind in the world."
Additional standard features include Sirius Satellite Radio, park distance control, a power liftgate, a new instrument cluster and new silver metallic trim standard on the base model.
