Engine choices are expected to be similar to those of theAudi A6, and include a 255bhp 3.2-litre V6 and a 350bhp 4.2-litre V8.

A Lamborghini-derived 435bhp V10 unit is also expected to be included in the range, linked to quattro four-wheel-drive.

Spy Photos: Audi A7

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Audi is hard at work on the 2009 A7 four-door coupe, and spy photographers are offering an early look at the future Mercedes CLS competitor.

Audi A7-2Audi A7-3Audi A7The renderings illustrate possible styling details for the large coupe, while spy shots of the A7 mule look largely like the current Audi sedans. The mule is made up of an Audi A8 torso, mated to the front end of an Audi A6.

The four- or five-passenger coupe will likely be Quattro only, with a front-wheel drive version possible as an entry-level model in some international markets. The A7 is expected to ride on the next A6 platform, and will likely be powered by a 4.2-liter V8, with options to include a 450-horsepower 6.0-liter W12 and a 450-horsepower 5.2-liter FSI V10.

What this means to you: Mercedes-Benz introduced the idea of the four-door "coupe"; we'll see if Audi can perfect it with the A7.
