2010 Ford Shelby GT500 is On Fire – Video

It’s rare that we’ll cover a an Amercian car aside from the Tesla, especially a Ford unless it’s a tricked-out truck. However, the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 with 540hp brings a new era for the formerly one-dimension vehicle. Where as the past 2009 Shelby GT was great in the quarter mile and not much else, the 2010 model keeps up with other supercar driving experiences. More importantly for the Shelby, it looks great doing a burnout. Check out the video above and enjoy!

2010 Ford Shelby GT500 - Detroit Show preview

With just days until the 2009 North American International Auto Show opens to auto industry guests, followed by public-access days, automakers continue to tease about upcoming production and concept car unveilings. At the LA Auto Show, we saw the next-generation Ford Mustang introduced. We have since reviewed the 2010 Mustang and can appreciate the basis for the latest treat to escape Ford’s pony corral, the drool-inducing Shelby GT500 variation.

2010 Ford Shelby GT500Ford's Special Vehicle Team used the gains made on the 40th anniversary edition Shelby GT500KR "King of the Road" Mustangs as the performance starting point and built from there upon the revised 2010 Mustang platform. Like the KR, the new GT500 boasts 540 horsepower from a supercharged and intercooled 5.4-liter dual overhead cam V-8 engine with a 6,250 rpm redline. The engine is rowed with an upgraded six-speed manual transmission, with revised gearing that sees fifth gear change from .80 to .74 while sixth gear goes from .63 to .50. Translation: the 2010 Shelby GT500 will turn lower engine RPMs in those gears and deliver improved fuel efficiency.

Carroll Shelby says, "Building on what we learned to create the Shelby GT500KR, this new car offers a great combination of power, handling and braking. It is truly a special car that is a great deal of fun to drive."

2008 Ford Shelby GT500 - Performance

Just as the big-block GT500 from 1968 was a step up from the GT350, the 2008 Ford Shelby GT500’s 5.4-liter V-8 is a step up from the 4.6-liter V-8 used in Mustang GT – and even the landmark powertrain used in the last SVT Mustang Cobra. Not coincidentally, the new Shelby GT500 sports the largest-displacement engine installed in a volume version of the Mustang since 1973.

2008 Ford Shelby GT5002008 Ford Shelby GT500-2While the 5.4-liter V-8 block, dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder contribute significantly to horsepower capability of the GT500, adding a supercharger and intercooler are the icing on the cake. In fact, the configuration is similar to the Ford GT supercar, offering the right combination of classic Ford big-block power and modern technology. Using the Ford GT as a blueprint, SVT engineers gave the GT500 more total horsepower than any factory Mustang in the car’s celebrated history: 500!

SUPERCHARGED PERFORMANCE
Using the stout, cast-iron, 5.4-liter Triton V-8 as a starting point, the Shelby GT500 employs a Roots-type 8.5-pounds-per-square-inch Eaton supercharger and water-to-air intercooler to help it produce a broad torque band on its way to making a satisfying 480 foot-pounds.

The unique intake manifold helps to channel the supercharged fuel-air mixture into the cylinders. The special low-profile manifold design also effectively packages the entire induction system under the GT500’s functional air-extractor hood. Fuel comes from a dual-bore electronic throttle body borrowed from Ford’s 6.8-liter V-10 truck engine program.

Steeda Rolls Out 600-Plus-HP Ford Shelby GT500

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — If you can't keep all of the special-edition Mustangs straight, we can relate. Hot on the heels of the "Super Snake" packages for the 2007 and 2008 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 coupes comes the Steeda GT500, which promises 600-plus horsepower and uncompromised handling.

Steeda Ford Shelby GT500Steeda Ford Shelby GT500 2The "Super Snake" upgrades, an effort by Shelby Automobiles and Ford Racing, feature kits that jack up the output of the 5.4-liter V8 to 600 hp while retaining the factory engine warranty, and a non-warranty version that makes 725 horses. Steeda matches the base "Super Snake" kit with engine modifications that boost output to more than 600 hp.

Perhaps the most compelling part of the Steeda package is a new and patented Steeda coil-over suspension system, which the tuner said is "derived from over one year of research and development" and "greatly enhances aggressive performance driving without detracting from ride quality."

The Steeda package is priced at $13,995. At the very least, it will provide an interesting price comparison to the "Super Snake" kits. Ford has not yet released volume or pricing information on those kits.

* 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 tops in segment quality, says RDA Group research—92 percent of owners would definitely recommend the vehicle to family or friends.

DEARBORN, Mich., April 19, 2007 – Even with demand for the most muscular Mustang ever – the Ford Shelby GT500 – at a record high, Ford is cranking up additional interest with a new, limited-edition package that adds unique visual appeal to the Shelby GT500. Enter the "Red Stripe Appearance Package," to be available beginning in May.

The Ford Shelby GT500 is the most powerful Mustang on the road today and arguably one of the most successful projects from Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) in terms of performance, excitement and, importantly, quality.

In fact, early indicators show the Shelby GT500 is a quality standout. In the most recent Global Quality Research System (GQRS) study from RDA Group, an independent research company based in Bloomfield Hills, Mi., the Shelby GT500 earned praise as the highest-quality Mustang model, with the fewest “things gone wrong” in the first three months of ownership.

The Mustang line scores above the segment average in quality, according to the GQRS study, and the Shelby GT500 specifically scored the top result in the “sports car” segment.

“The unmatched quality and power of the latest Mustang masterpiece explains why 9 out of 10 owners are completely satisfied with their overall ownership experience,” the April 2007 RDA Group report concluded.

New Limited-Edition Shelby GT500 Package to be Available Beginning in May

The new Red Stripe Appearance Package will be available on any new 2007 Shelby GT500 Coupe with either White or Black exterior paint. Included in the special-edition package are Bright Red overbody and bodyside stripes, a Red and Black leather interior, unique red-accent exterior badges, including red-tinted Cobra emblems in the grille, fenders, and in the faux gas cap on the rear panel. Even the "SHELBY" letters on the decklid feature red accents.

The Red Stripe Appearance Package also adds unique new premium floor mats with a Red and Silver embroidered "Cobra Snake" logo, plus a fitted Shelby GT500-branded car cover.

The appearance package carries an MSRP of $1,650 and will be available from early May through late June, marking the end of the 2007 model run.

"The red package is all about exclusivity," said Robert Parker, Ford’s Car Marketing manager. "Our Mustang customers are eager to buy unique vehicles like the Shelby GT500 and will certainly appreciate the opportunity for something even more exclusive, made in an even more limited number. These are great customers and very passionate. I’m glad we can continue to deliver what they want.”

Shelby GT500 is among the Most Successful Performance Mustangs Ever

Enthusiasm doesn't begin to describe the ongoing demand for the Ford Shelby GT500. In the hyper-competitive auto market where supply routinely surpasses demand, the Shelby GT500 still has a long waiting list of buyers.

The Shelby GT500 was created by racing legend Carroll Shelby and Ford SVT and is a modern interpretation of the classic Shelby Mustang of the 1960s. Beneath the hood of every GT500 – including the new Red model – is a 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 engine officially rated at 500 hp. A 6-speed manual gearbox features evenly spaced gears that help provide a sharp, lively driving experience on both road and track.

In addition to the engine upgrades, Ford’s SVT engineers retuned and upgraded key Mustang chassis components. Improvements include revised shocks, spring rates and upgraded stabilizer bars that help the Ford Shelby GT500 maneuver with authority.

The GT500's unique design features include wide upper and lower fascia openings with a functional air splitter. On either side, slanting headlamp openings add to the dramatic front appearance. The carefully tailored hood has heat extractors protruding near the leading edge, combining to provide improved airflow and aerodynamics.

The MSRP of a 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 starts at $41,675.
