2009 Toyota Yaris updated for European Market

In the latest example Toyota has updated the 2009 Yaris for the Euro market. The update includes the availability of a new 1.3-liter engine with a six-speed manual, a minor facelift, and Toyota's Optimal Drive.

The new 1.3-liter inline-four (Toyota calls it a 1.33-liter) is borrowed from the iQ mini car. It produces 100 hp and is attached to a six-speed manual transmission. It also boasts start/stop technology that shuts off the engine at idle to save gas. Toyota's Optimal Drive is included as well. This improvement enhances combustion, saves weight and reduces friction all in the name of higher efficiency.

Toyota says the combination achieves 55.4 mpg on the Euro combined cycle. The other two engines available are the gas-powered 1.0-liter three-cylinder, and a 1.4-liter diesel. Just to compare, in the U.S. we're stuck with the lone 1.5-liter four-banger with either a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. It's just not fair.

Pricing in the UK starts at £8,585 on the road. With the possibility of the iQ coming to the States, perhaps Toyota will consider offering the 1.3-liter as option in the U.S. Until then we'll just have to be jealous.

Toyota Yaris recall

Toyota and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced today a major Safety Recall involving 134,900 Yaris units. The Toyota Yaris recall refers to vehicle sold in the United States and built from 2006 through 2007.

The Toyota Yaris is equipped with driver and front passenger seat belt pretensioners that retract the seat belts in case of a crash. The reason for this Toyota Yaris recall is that the pretensioner deployment may affect the sound insulating foam in the center pillar, following a collision.

Toyota will inform owners of the involved vehicles with a Safety Recall notification via first-class mail beginning in early February. Owners are requested to contact their local Toyota dealer for repair. The repair will take approximately one hour, depending on the dealer's workload.

Get a load of all this! It's the world's first Toyota Yaris "estate" car. MV Designz in Southern California took a five-door Yaris and turned the tailgate into an electrically operated split tailgate. It reversed the opening of the rear doors to suicide doors.

Yet another one of this year's SEMA Motor SHow's environmentally friendly concepts, it runs on natural gas. The wide body kit allows room for 11-inch wide 19-inch wheels in the rear.

2008 Toyota Yaris Rush

With 22 rivals in the light-car segment and the new Mazda2 taking some of the limelight away from Toyota’s Yaris, the Japanese giant has announced a special-edition Yaris RUSH model to give buyers a reason to come back to the Big T.

Not that Toyota needs to be worried, so far this year the Yaris has been the best selling light-car in Australia. Toyota has held this title with the Yaris and Echo for the last five years, but it never hurts to be more competitive.

Available for a limited time, Yaris RUSH is essentially a YR 5-door hatch with more than $1000 worth of added specification for $500.

The 14-inch steel wheels are replaced with 15-inch alloys from the more expensive YRX model and the standard single CD player has given way to a six-stack system with Bluetooth connectivity and added foglamps. Buyers also receive “Yaris”-branded mats and a special-edition badge.

Standard features of the YR model include twin front airbags, air-conditioning, anti-skid brakes, power windows and mirrors, seatbelt pretensioners and force limiters for the front seats and power steering.

Unfortunately buyers still need to pay an extra $750 for side and curtain airbags. Metallic paint is also an additional $300. The 1.3-litre four-cylinder Yaris is priced from $16,890 for the five-speed manual and $18,390 for the four-speed automatic.

Toyota has started work on the facelift for the Yaris, which by all accounts should be released by mid 2008. In brief, the nose has been corrected and the rear lights have been modified. However, perhaps these modifications are not an example of a proper restyling but simply an annual model retouch.

The Yaris Japanese car will undergo a few minor changes, only recognisable by a keen eye. The radiator grille will become narrower, whilst the tail lights will have new covers. The engine line-up will most likely be upgraded for better fuel economy and lower emissions.
