Ken Block drives the Subaru Impreza – video

Ken Block and the Subaru Impreza look like quite a lethal combination in this video. In a display of pure Impreza acrobatics, we see the Subaru Impreza STI prepared by Crowford at 566 hp in a little industrial set rally car drive. With plenty of wheel spin and drifting going on, the top-notch video editing is part of the package.

Subaru Impreza STI

Subaru is throwing its hat in the ring again for the Nurburgring 24-hour race this year in the form of an Impreza WRX STI.

The Impreza STI (Subaru Tecnica International) will run in the SP3T class of the 37th ADAC Zurich 24 Hour Race, as it is officially called. Subaru's STI unit has used the Nordschleife run at Nurburgring, sometimes referred to as the Old Course, to test many of its vehicles including this latest Impreza STI, which will set out to prove its endurance mettle in the long-distance race, an event in which Subaru has participated since 2005.

Subaru Impreza STI-1Subaru Impreza STI-2To run in an endurance race, the WRX STI has undergone some changes to the chassis, with a stiffening of the body and other components, as well as the addition of a Flexible Tower Bar. The STI team that will run the race is headed by Hideharu Tatsumi, who also serves as the manager of STI's Vehicle Experiment Division.

The WRX STI comes with a 4-cylinder, horizontally opposed, 2.0 liter DOHC turbo driving the symmetrical AWD system. The car will be raced by 4 Japanese drivers.

The 37th ADAC Zurich 24 Hour Race at the Nordschleife/Nurburgring takes place from the 21st to the 24th of May. The Subaru team can be followed at their dedicated STI NBR CHALLENGE web site: www.subaru-sti.co.jp/e/nbr24h2009/

Subaru Impreza diesel delayed for the UK

In this installment of "As the Yen Skyrockets," Autocar is reporting that the introduction of the long-awaited Subaru Impreza diesel has been delayed indefinitely due to unfavorable exchange rates. A source inside International Motors, the firm that imports Subarus into the UK, told Autocar, "At the current rate we would have to charge vastly more than we can justify for the diesel Impreza if we were to make a profit. As a result we can't guarantee when the car will go on sale as we can't predict when the economy will change."

Subaru Impreza dieselBoth Toyota and Honda are facing the same problem, with Honda CEO Takeo Fukui going so far as to threaten moving Honda's headquarters outside of Japan. Analysts predict that the yen could begin to sink in the coming weeks, but if the market doesn't correct itself, the Japanese government might have to intervene and begin devaluing its currency.

2008 Subaru Impreza sedan

The controversial new generation Impreza has returned for 2008 with a more recognisable profile. Subaru has now officially released the sedan variant of its all-wheel drive Impreza range - carrying a price tag identical to that of the equivalent model hatch.

2008 Subaru Impreza sedan-12008 Subaru Impreza sedan-2Buyers of the Impreza R, RX and RS variants now have the option between either a hatch or sedan without having to take into consideration any price premium. The sedan model still boasts a five-star crashworthiness rating for occupant safety from ANCAP with Subaru’s Vehicle Dynamics Control stability system standard on all models.

The new generation Impreza has averaged more than 1000 sales per month with year-to-date sales up 12.5 percent - and that’s without a sedan model, until now. The Impreza sedan is 35mm higher with a wheelbase 95mm longer than the previous model which provides extra head and leg room.

The boot space has also increased by 45mm with more useable space thanks to the double wishbone rear suspension, with a split/fold rear seat included for the first time for even greater cargo carrying flexibility.

All naturally aspirated variants offer the choice of five speed manual and four speed SPORTSHIFT automatic transmissions.

Subaru Boxer Diesel Forester and Impreza in Paris

Forester sales in Australia are going through the roof. August 2008 sales of the ever-popular compact SUV pulverised every competitor in the class. Even Toyota’s super successful RAV4 took a hiding with just 922 units against Forester’s 1,534 sales. Subaru Australia would be over the moon as they held a 23.3 percent market share in the category, with Toyota managing just 14.0 percent.

The Forester 2.0D produces 108kW (145hp) at 3,600 rpm and 350Nm at 1,800 rpm with astonishing fuel economy to boot. You’ll be hard pressed to find any SUV than can better the 5.2 litres/100km combined figure. It also attracts a big “green” tick too, pushing out just 167g/km CO2 emissions clearly benefiting from a Subaru designed closed-type particulate filter.

SubaruBut while the engine might be new to the Forester and Impreza line up, it has been employed in Europe under the bonnet of the Legacy and Outback, since earlier this year. Both vehicles will feature a standard six-speed manual gearbox. There is no mention of an auto box which will obviously limit sales although, it must be said, most Europeans (that’s both sexes) are competent with a manual shift.

It’s hats off to the Subaru engineers for achieving what many said couldn’t be done with the lightweight Boxer set up. Although the blocks are the same, every other part of the engine structure, including the fuel-injection system, had to be strengthened to accommodate the higher forces of diesel compression.

While the engine is said to be noisy at idle (show me a small diesel that isn’t) Subaru say it has rolling sound levels to 70.5 decibels, which is said to be lower than that of a Rolls Royce Phantom. While that sounds impressive, it s not quite a fair comparison given the Rolls is powered by a 6.75 litre V12 monster. Still that sort of dB level is class leading.

2009 Subaru Impreza WRX

The 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX goes down the road quite quickly, rides nice, and is certainly a better place to sit than the previous generation. But when Subaru sanitized it for a supposedly wider audience, the edge and character that made its forebears so special in the eyes of the faithful was lost. Apparently the wider audience hasn’t come and the faithful have been sitting on their wallets, or opening them elsewhere. Well, not to spoil the ending, if you’re a card carrying Scooby fan, head on down to your local Subaru shop in the next few weeks and take a test drive.

2009 Subaru Impreza WRXThe big number is 265 — as in horsepower, up 40 hp on the ’08 (and more lux orientated new-for-2009 Impreza GT) and down 40 hp on the big brother STI. The other number that is up, more importantly, is the torque– now 244 lb-ft — and all that twisting force hits earlier due to the new bigger, quicker spooling turbo. Joining that new turbo is a bigger intercooler, slightly fatter exhaust and high flow cat along with ECU tuning and transmission toughening to aid the motor strengthening. The suspension is dropped a little, stiffened a bit, and a few pieces in the steering are fine tuned. On the outside a set of fatter, smarter, anthracite finished wheels along with bigger 225/45R17 tires, have been slapped on. The bodywork gets a not so extreme makeover with the optional aero kit from ’08 now standard, and big brother STI’s honeycomb grill work.

Looks were a big issue when the ’08 hit the web. Bland and generic would cover it best. With just a few subtle changes the ’09 suddenly becomes purposeful, aggressive and (vaguely) handsome, especially in the new Lightning Red. Normally I’m not a fan of red cars but, aside from the obvious attention that the hue gets from the authorities, it would probably be my choice. Sorry, no WR Blue for me. The lowered suspension and wider wheels hunker the ‘Rex closer to the pavement. Inside, canvas style charcoal fabric seat covers, a few well placed faux metal inserts, and all important WRX badging give off an appropriately sporty feel. It’s still no (class leading) VW GTI, but the new WRX doesn’t let itself down in the price segment by any means, and the overall upmarket move of the ‘08 interior remains intact and appreciated for daily driving

The motor mods bring on more boost and so more power earlier, and it hangs on longer. Right out of the gate it’s clear that the engineers have earned their paychecks. From about 3000 rpm there’s decent punch then a big fat sweet spot rolls in for backroad playtime from 4000 rpm to 6000 rpm, punctuated by everyone’s favorite trademark boxer growl. The car is fast, 265 hp is about what a new $80k Porsche 911 put down ten years ago! And, big surprise, unlike the older boxer turbos, this one doesn’t run out of breathes or drop off dramatically on top.

2010 Subaru Impreza Coupe

This is the boy-racer Impreza we all know and love. Subaru has announced it will produce a coupe version of its Impreza hatchback by 2010.

This will be the first two-door Impreza from Subaru in almost a decade, not seen since 399 of the first-generation STi Impreza’s were imported as a two-door exclusively for the Australian market - the 400th fell off the boat.

2010 Subaru Impreza Coupe -1The coupe takes obvious styling cues from the hatch, but features a much lower slung roof line thanks to the deleted rear doors, and a more aggressive approach on the current Impreza front end.

The engine line-up will be on par with the current range, with a naturally aspirated and turbocharged STi-spec version of the 2.5-litre boxer engine - and thats only if it makes it to Australia.

As earlier reports suggested, the AWD system will be dropped for entry level models in favour of a lightweight, more affordable rear-drive setup.

2007 Tokyo Auto Show Preview: Subaru Impreza BEAMS Edition

TOKYO — Subaru has been moderately successful in North America in teaming with outfitter L.L. Bean on outdoorsy versions of several models. Now, Japanese domestic buyers have their own special vehicle: the Impreza BEAMS Edition.

Subaru Impreza BEAMS EditionSubaru Impreza BEAMS Edition-1Subaru Impreza BEAMS Edition-2Subaru has teamed with BEAMS, a Japanese purveyor of hip fashions with the advertising slogan of "Art for Everyday." Curiously, the BEAMS Web site promotes clothing with "Clean American Casual Style."

There isn't much more to the Impreza BEAMS than paint and trim. The car is painted orange — the BEAMS signature color — and the black leather seats are top-stitched in orange.

Without elaboration, Subaru says in its Tokyo show teaser that "we aimed to create a car that puts a smile on your face." We have to admit, the orange-and-black theme just before Halloween works for us.

What this means to you: Consider the BEAMS edition as the Japanese equivalent of our L.L. Bean models.
