Paris 2010: Range Rover Evoque shows up ready for production

2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

Land Rover's critical new Range Rover Evoque debuted today at the Paris Motor Show, ushering in a brave new world for the British off-roader brand. The debut continues the company's march toward the softroader segment, a movement first started with the LR2/Freelander and now resulting in the handsome new three-door seen here.

Slated to be joined shortly by a five-door version, the compact Evoque fits right into the Land Rover mold design-wise, albeit with a surprising amount of surface jewelry for such a sleek two-box shape. From the protruding fog lamps to the horizontal matte chrome-trimmed hood intakes to the unique divots atop the wheel lip moldings and the somewhat fiddly taillamp lenses, there's quite a bit to draw one's eye. The overall impression one gets of the vehicle on the show floor is one of imposing width, a feeling that's magnified when you realize that an individual of average height can see over the vehicle when standing next to it.

The drivetrain is no less revolutionary for the brand, with a 2.0-liter turbo four pushing out 240 horsepower through a new permanent all-wheel-drive system. Key options for the Evoque include Adaptive Dynamics and Magneride adaptive damping and a massive panoramic roof which makes the interior feel like a greenhouse even on the Paris show floor. While the littlest Rover lacks the full-on four-wheel-drive weaponry of its bigger siblings, it does feature the latest distillation of the company's Terrain Response Control, and with good arrival and departure angles, it should still be better than most crossovers when it comes to tackling off-pavement activities.

Spy Shots 2009 Range Rover Sport

The 2009 Range Rover Sport looks like it's getting a slightly revised face. After undergoing minor cosmetic surgery, the Sport comes out with grillework that's reminiscent of the Land Rover LR2's as well as a new front bumper. Out back and along the sides, the SUV seems to be unchanged compared to the current model.

As for when it'll be shown to the public, who knows? Geneva's just around the corner, though, so we'll have our gang keep an eye out for it when they're not eyeballing Renaults or noshing on good chocolate and tasty Lake Geneva perch filets.

2008 Land Rover Range Rover

(from Land Rover Press Release) Enhancements to the Range Rover for 2008 add a series of further luxury touches and practical new features, including four-zone air conditioning. The improvements are expected to help maintain the strong market performance of the Range Rover, with sales in the first four months of 2007 already 19% up worldwide over last year.

2008 Land Rover Range Rover"That increase is largely due to the huge popularity of the acclaimed TDV8 diesel that we introduced to the Range Rover line-up last year," says Phil Popham, Land Rover's managing director. "The engine's great combination of performance and fuel economy has not only powered overall Range Rover sales, but also shifted our diesel/petrol mix, especially in Europe. Most Range Rover customers who would previously have bought a V8 petrol now choose a TDV8 instead, which offers petrol-like refinement but with 32% better fuel economy."

The list of changes for 2008 is headed by the introduction of four-zone air conditioning, which enables rear seat passengers to control their individual heating and ventilation. This is neatly complemented with 'climate control' windscreen and side glass which is now available in conjunction with automatic rain and headlight sensing. The special glass cuts infrared heat transmission into the vehicle, reducing heat build up when the vehicle is parked in the sun, for example, so allowing the air conditioning to function faster and more effectively on drive away.

A redesigned rear seat armrest provides extra stowage space (including a dedicated location for the optional rear seat entertainment remote control) and there is additional leather trim on the heating and ventilation unit and centre console. There are now a total of seven real wood veneers to choose from, all sourced from sustainable forests, and additional wood veneer elements have been applied to the rear of the centre console. A matching wooden gear knob has also been introduced on some models.

2008 Arden Range Rover AR7

(from Arden Press Release) Elegance, discreet sportiness and understatement have always been the characteristics of British cars. The car enhancement specialist and registered automobile manufacturer from Krefeld was unable to resist the attraction of these vehicles over 30 years ago. It has for many years been a refuge for customers wanting it to individualise their Jaguar or Range Rover and emphasize its typical characteristics.

2008 Arden Range Rover AR72008 Arden Range Rover AR7-22008 Arden Range Rover AR7-3Ardens latest development is the AR7. It is based on the Range Rover LM, which Arden completely converts and provides with more overtaking prestige. The base vehicle which is impressive due to its sheer size becomes captivating with its extraordinary sporty look. Meanwhile enhanced performance of the Range Rover compressor motor contributes to the sporty driving performance.

Superior performance
Arden obtains not less than 480 HP from the from the supercharged V8, its cubic capacity having been raised to 4.5 litres. Together with the torque which has been increased to an ample 680 Nm, this provides the not exactly light Range Rover with an appealing driving performance. The sheer power catapults the British SUV from nought to one hundred km/h in 6.5 seconds. Outstanding engine power goes without saying. Even if speeds beyond 200 km/h do not happen often due to the flow of traffic, the Arden AR7s 480 HP make over 240 km/h possible.

2008 Range Rover Sport Supercharged – Review

A "Grand Touring" car is one that is fast, comfortable, and luxurious, and meant for long-distance travel at a high average speed. The category originally applied to two-seat, or perhaps 2+2, coupes that offered performance equal to or better than the sports cars of the day, with far greater comfort. This still may be the purist definition, but over the years there have been a number of sedans that could be considered for the category as well.

2008 Range Rover Sport PERFORMANCE: Under the Sport Supercharged's hood sits 4.2 liters of supercharged and intercooled twincam, aluminum alloy V8. 390 horsepower, 410 lb-ft of torque, instant acceleration. With torque like that, a transmission is hardly needed, but the Sport's ZF six-speed automatic contributes to the vehicle's prowess and civility. With 0-60 acceleration in the low 7 second range, passing and merging are no problem. There is a manual-shift mode, but rarely is there the slightest necessity as torque comes in early and strong, peaking at 3500 rpm. With its 5700-pound mass and the available power, stopping a Range Rover Sport takes strong brakes, and the Dynamic Response Package's are up to the task. Four-piston Brembo calipers grip large vented discs in front, with smaller calipers and rotors at the rear. Fuel economy? Do the math... 5700 pounds + 390 horsepower != "economy". The laws of physics are always obeyed, no loopholes here. At around 13 mpg overall, it's no different from most other SUVs.
