The Cobra can once again proudly sit alongside the top marques of the World.

The original Cobra's story begins in the 1960's with the production of the Ace roadster by specialist Surrey-based British sports car company AC. Wanting to find a competitor for the Chevrolet Corvette, American ex-racing driver Carroll Shelby requested AC modify the Ace to accept a small block V8 engine, and the resulting car was re-named the Cobra. It was an instant success, and soon became a legendary race winner in both Europe and America.

When upgraded with bigger and more powerful engines, the Cobra became a fearsome and truly unbeatable racing car. Along with the mechanical alterations made to enable the original Ace to be fit for racing, the necessary bodywork alterations provided the Cobra with it's now unmistakable muscular appearance. The AC/Shelby Cobra has since become a true classic of the motoring world, as both a roadster and racing car - cementing it's iconic place in history.

Snake on the plains: FPV (Ford Performance Vehicles) Cobra

When we saw the Holden VE Ute back at the end of August, we thought we'd found extreme ute heaven. But there might be two mad performance pickups on that cloud.

This is the FPV (Ford Performance Vehicles) Cobra, unveiled at the Australian motor show to leave us seriously contemplating a minor felony to get ourselves deported down under.

FPV (Ford Performance Vehicles) Cobra FPV (Ford Performance Vehicles) Cobra-1Powered by a 404bhp 5.4-litre V8, the Cobra sits on 19-inch wheels, while that blue-on-white paintjob is standard. You've got the choice of a six-speed manual or a ZF six-speed auto too, though that snake (see the second photo) is an optional extra.

There's also a saloon version of the Cobra available, which gets a limited slip diff and track-ready suspension. But you don't want that one. You want the ute. Not least because it's more exclusive: 400 special-edition saloons are being produced, against just 100 utes.

Sadly, you won't be able to buy either: Ford Australia says that all the Cobras are already sold out. Damn. Better return all those scrumped apples, then.
