Acrobatic parking from the Toyota iQ – video

Sometimes I dream of a car that’s easy to park, especially in Europe, and the Toyota iQ could be the next solution. In this video you can see the iQ in parking action with even a little stunt move at the end. Whether you will actually be allowed to park you car like this is probably superfluous in the end - whoever gives you a fine, it will only be because they’re jealous.

Japan votes Toyota iQ as COTY

It’s that time of the year again when the COTY (Car of the Year) awards start flowing in thick and fast. Among those awards today comes news that Japan has voted Toyota’s iQ, the world’s smallest four-seater passenger car, as their 2008 Japan Car of the Year.

Toyota iQThe cute iQ almost doubled the points attained by second place winner, Citroen’s C5, to romp home the award judges say was given for efficient use of space, clever design and the ability to seat four people in a body less than three metres long. Judges also complimented iQ’s high safety levels and low CO2 emissions.

The Japanese COTY awards are scored by a panel of 65 jurors (mostly motoring journalists) who are each allowed to nominate twenty-five points. Ten points must be given to the one car they like best with the remaining fifteen points to be allocated among four other cars. In all 39 of the judges allocated points to the iQ.

2009 Toyota iQ spied

We first saw the Concept Car iQ at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show and were somewhat confused as to what Toyota was actually thinking. Nonetheless the Toyota iQ will go into production later this year. So it’s no surprise them to find it out and about being tested.

Toyota plans to complete with the Smart fortwo and take a chunk of the compact urban transportation market share.

2009 Toyota iQ-12009 Toyota iQ-2However unlike the fortwo, the iQ has the capability to seat up to three passengers - and it’s less than three metres in length. Plus you can still fit a child or luggage.

Toyota has spent considerable engineering hours working this on out, but the company believes it will be a success and hailed as a breakthrough in space innovation.

Geneva 2008 Toyota IQ and Urban Cruiser

The new cars announced by Toyota should be a truly important addition to the forthcoming Geneva Motor Show. On display will be the IQ urban car and the brand new model, the Urban Cruiser. The IQ was first seen in concept form in Frankfurt in September 2007 and time-wise in terms of development it has beaten the Volskwagen UP!, which was displayed only a few stands away at the same show.

2008 Toyota IQ2008 Toyota Urban CruiserThree passenger spaces have been confirmed, despite the length being less than three metres. Also confirmed is the shape of the prototype, with large wheels and a smoother drive. Even though the glimpses we have had of the IQ seem to be similar in concept to the Smart For Two, Toyota insists that the technology, the security and the design research represent an automotive revolution. As of yet, the specification details and performance stats, as well as the pricing have not been released, but we know that the car will not be available on the market before the end of 2008.

The other world premiere at the show will be the Urban Cruiser, a compact SUV designed for city use with fuel consumption and emissions reduced to a minimum. For the time being, we have little information and only one photo, but in Geneva we will discover more on this new car, that at first glance reminds us of the design of a few models sold in the States such as the Xb by Toyota's Scion brand.

Always concerned about the environment, Toyota will put forward the brand new hybrid prototype 'Plug-In'. At Geneva Toyota plans to display the 1/X Plug-In Hybrid concept with Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV) technology, as well as the personal mobility concept i-Real.
