2009 Fiat 500 Barbie edition

Fiat 500 makes headlines once more, as befits an authentic Made in Italy icon. This time its an original 2009 Fiat 500 Barbie edition dedicated to the most famous fashion doll ever: Barbie. Then there are mats enhanced with natural silk yarn and sleek viscose, not to mention lip glosses in brilliant colours stored in the glove compartment, plus a LED-decked vanity mirror to ensure perfect application. And there's more. The car has more features than a crown has jewels! Crystals sparkle on interior bezels, hubcaps, outer window mouldings and antenna and even outline the dolls famed silhouette on the pillars. Lastly, this Fiat 500 show car also has its own glossy cover, featuring the distinctive Sixties version of the Fiat 500 and a Barbie autograph.

The latest Fiat 500 show car will appear in public for the first time on Monday 9 March, from 6.30pm onwards, when it will race through the quintessential streets of Milans fashion district. Barbie will be aboard and she'll have her own special driver: Ken, of course. On arriving at the entrance to La Rinascente department store, in Piazza Duomo, Barbie will leave the car and walk the unique pink carpet created just for her. The band Nena will be playing live in the background, reviving some of the most famous pop songs from the fifty years of the legendary fashion doll's existence.

Roberto Giolito, creator of the Fiat 500, had this to say about the Mattel-Fiat partnership scheme: All-American Ms Barbie already has a number of transport solutions available, like thundering GTs and motor homes with endless accessories. 2009 Fiat 500 Cabriolet spied

The camouflage wrapping on at least one Fiat 500 Cabriolet has been conveniently damaged while in transit, giving us our best look yet at the little hatch’s new roof.

These images confirm that the 500 Cabriolet will use a textile roof, featuring a small integrated rear spoiler and high-mount brake light.

This latest addition to the Fiat line-up will use a targa-like roof rather than a completely convertible design, most likely to save costs and weight.

In addition, the roof design also allows Fiat to distance the 500 Cabriolet from competing models such as the Mini or Volkswagen Beetle Convertibles which both use a completely convertible rag-top roof.

Fiat 500 DIESEL

DIESEL as in Diesel clothing, has collaborated with Fiat to create a special edition version of the new 500 minicar that will be produced in 10,000 copies over the next two years. Based on the Sport version, the ‘500 by Diesel’ is available in three exterior colors (olive green, black and brown). Unique exterior features include the aluminum trim on the bumpers, the protective strips on the door, the yellow brake calipers and the Diesel insignias.

Likewise, the interior has been enhanced with special upholstery fabrics made from denim while the Diesel brand logo makes its appearance on the dashboard and the gear knob. The 500 by Diesel will be available with two petrol engines, a 69HP 1.2-liter and a 100HP 1.4-liter unit as well as a 1.3 Mutlijet turbo diesel delivering 75HP, with prices set at €15,000 for the 1.2 and at €17,000 for both the 1.4 and 1.3 Multijet variants.

2008 Fiat 500 by Tracey Emin

It has to be the most expensive Fiat 500 in the world – and at Ј200,000, it turned out to be one of the star lots at an amazing fund-raising charity auction in London last week.Generous donors from the ARK (Absolute Return for Kids) charity raised an incredible Ј25 million for children at a gala reception in the Royal Naval College, Greenwich on Thursday (5 June) with an auction which included the iconic Fiat.

It wasn’t just any 500 though. This was one of four specially designed and painted examples of the supermini which took the art world by storm last year, designed and painted by acclaimed English artist Tracey Emin. The work, entitled ‘Dark, Dark, Dark’, was among lots which included diamonds, a safari holiday, a speaking role in actress Uma Thurman’s next film, Eloise in Paris, use of a luxury yacht, fashion pieces and other works of art.

“We were very pleased with how the car was received,” says Charlotte Locks-Moro, the charity’s event executive. “The Ј200,000 it raised is not only an amazing amount of money for a car, but it was also a significant sum towards the total we raised for charity. We are absolutely delighted.”

More than 1,200 guests attended the auction, including former Prime Minister Tony Blair, the actress Uma Thurman and model superstar Liz Hurley.

ARK is a charity organisation made up of financial institutions, including City hedge funds, and personal donors. It raises millions of pounds every year for good causes in areas such as tackling HIV in Africa, children in care in Eastern Europe, and inner city education in the UK.

The first of the Tracey Emin-designed cars, called ‘I Told You Not To’ went under the hammer for Ј42,000 last October during the Contemporary Art Auction in London.

Fiat 500 Abarth Assetto Corse

Fiat’s performance devision has released the first details of its new 147kW Fiat 500 race car. Developed by a team of Abarth engineers and designers, the ‘500 Abarth Assetto Corse’ will campaign on race tracks across Europe in 2009.

The Abarth version sports a full racing kit with a wider track, white 17’ special ultralight racing wheels, low ride, sports racing mirrors and a place for a number on the sides.

It also receives a new, more aggressive front end with an aerodynamic chin spoiler, a white winged spoiler, dual exhaust outlets and Abarth branding.

The Abarth heritage is also expressed with a thunderbolt logo on the side representing the brand’s racing image and a red band and four white checkers on the roof, just as on the winning Abarth 850TC version of the 1960s.

Inside the ‘500 Abarth Assetto Corse’ gets the full race-spec roll-cage treatment, sports steering wheel, racing harness and an optimised racing position, shifting the racing seats closer toward the centre of the car.

The ‘500 Abarth Assetto Corse’ is powered by a 1.4-litre engine which has been boosted by a Garrett GT 1446 fixed geometry turbocharger developing 147kW at 6500rpm and 300Nm at 3000rpm. This is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, naturally.

Abarth has also provided a racing outfit for the drivers, including overalls, helmets, gloves and shoes, all branded with the ultra-new ‘Assetto Corse’ logo produced for the limited edition of the car.

But sometimes the Laupheim-based technicians move off the beaten tracks and devote themselves to something completely unexpected – in this case the Fiat 500. The HAMANN-technicians started with a lot of joy and enthusiasm for the cool little retro sports car and developed the extensive HAMANN sportivo–tuning programme. Striking 17-inch rims and a lively flag pattern optically emphasize the racy character of this little Italian. The strong sound of the HAMANN-sport exhaust system for the 1.4 litre petrol car also underlines this acoustically. A performance optimization for the diesel model, progressive chassis springs and a newly-developed braking system round out the racy appearance and provide a speedy joyride.

The design wheel HM sportivo I stands for trendy mobile appearance and perfect handling. The matt black varnish rim in one piece has a diamond-polished outer edge and is offered in the size 7.0 x 17. HAMANN recommends matching tyres in the sizes 195/40 ZR17 or 215/34 ZR 17 by its technology partner Hankook. A complete wheel-set can be obtained from 1,420 Ђ. The HAMANN-set for lowering chassis leads to a further improvement in handling the car and ensures that the vehicle centre which is made up from four progressively spun springs is lowered by 30mm.

The increased performance by HAMANN costs 699 Ђ for the 1,3 Multijet 16V Fiat 500 diesel model. After re-programming the integrated control unit, the motor renders up to 90 hp / 66 kW at 4,000 r.p.m. (series: 75 hp / 55 KW) and a maximum torque of 230 Nm at 1,750 r.p.m. (series: 145 Nm at 1,500 r.p.m.).

The aluminium pedal set including footrest and a car mat set with an embroidered HAMANN sportive logo accentuate the interior and perfect the Fiat 500 programme in a stylish way.

Fiat 500 estate to take on Clubman

Here's a Fiat 500 that’s got a little bit extra – to boot! The Italian giant is setting its sights on the MINI Club-man with an estate version of its successful small car – and this is how it will look.
Our exclusive pictures reveal the spacious new city challenger, which will hit showrooms in 2010. As you can see, it won’t rely on gimmicks used by its MINI rival, so there are no rear passenger doors, just a practical tailgate.

The extended roofline boosts head-room in the back and frees up more luggage space, making this the most sensible 500 of the range. The compact estate is inspired by the small load-lugger from the Sixties, and could even carry the same Giardiniera badge worn by that model. Fiat will keep development costs to a minimum by using the same front end and wheelbase as found on the hatch. However, a slightly longer rear overhang, a more upright tail and a pair of neat alloy roof rails will set the new model apart.

The Giardiniera won’t be the first 500 estate to appear, though. Italian coachbuilding firm Castagna showed its vision of the load-lugging city car at the Geneva Motor Show last month.

The firm has a history of beating manufacturers at their own game, having designed a line-up of MINI estates before the Club-man was officially revealed.

The standard 500’s engine range will be carried over to the Giardiniera, so customers will get the choice of an entry-level 69bhp 1.2-litre petrol unit, a more power-ful 100bhp 1.4-litre or a 75bhp 1.3-litre Multijet diesel. Fiat is also believed to be considering a hot Abarth version of the estate if there is sufficient demand. However, the next 500 variant to appear on UK roads will be the cabriolet, as seen in the sketch below. This model is set to be unveiled at the 2009 Geneva expo and hit showrooms late next year.

2008 Fiat 500 1.3 JTD Lounge

When we saw the Fiat 500s going around Albert park prior to this year’s Australian Formula 1 grand prix, there was a sense of excitement from everyone, not only was Fiat back for good, but now it had a fighting chance.

The current Fiat 500 range starts at $22,990 for the 1.2-litre 5-speed manual pop hatchback and goes all the way to $29,990 for the 1.4-litre lounge hatchback. But now there is a new variant, the Fiat 500 1.3 JTD Lounge.

The 1.3-litre JTD Lounge comes in response to the changing attitude of the Australian market. Many more new-car-buyers are now aware of the benefits of diesel motors and given the rising price of petrol, it makes perfect sense. The small oil burner only uses 4.2-litres of diesel per 100 km and comes equipped with the best that Fiat has to offer in the 500 range.

The 1.3-litre unit only weighs 130 kg and measures 50 cm long by 65 cm tall. According to Fiat, it will be able to travel around 250,000 km without needing any maintenance to the mechanical components. The 500 has has taken the Volkswagen Beetle’s place as the cool stylish city car with character. But its popularity has caused some problems with the waiting list now extending out for the next four months.

The entry into the 500 world comes in the Pop package which despite its name, is packed with a load of features such as air conditioning, trip computer, electric front windows, remote central locking, ABS brakes and six airbags. It receives a five-star safety rating from EuroNCAP.

Moving up to the Lounge grade, a climate control unit and a fixed glass roof with a sun blind join the party as does the chrome exterior trim pack, alloy wheels, front fog lights, Bluetooth communications package with steering wheel mounted controls, leather steering wheel and gearknob.

The new Fiat 500 JTD Lounge retails for $28,990 and is available to order now. If you’re after the new ‘cool’ city car, better get into your nearest Fiat dealer because the waiting list is only getting bigger.

Fiat's got wood

Wood has been largely superseded in recent years as a car-building material by, well, stuff that doesn't catch fire. Or snap. Or splinter. Mostly, anyhow.

But that hasn't stopped Italian coachbuilder Castagna putting together the WoodyWagon (honest), a stretched Fiat 500 that might just give a few clues to the styling of the official estate Cinq, set to arrive later this year.

We can't imagine it'll get the WoodyWagon's old-school grain panelling, but beneath that B&Q-chic exterior lurks a stretched chassis with a bigger boot and more upright tailgate - all of which seems to fit rather nicely with the 500s cheery, curvy lines.
Castagna's engine modifications sound tasty, too. The 500's 1.4-litre 100bhp unit has been fitted with a supercharger, boosting power to 155mph and allowing the 500 to hit 60mph in under eight seconds. If you fancy an Abarth but suffer from an irrational phobia of scorpion decals, you know where to go.

Castagna has also created a wood-panelled Mini Clubman, named the Mini Woody Passion Kit. It sounds like a pocket-sized sex aid and looks even less appealing. Oh dear.

Fiat 500 Abarth Geneva preview

Following leaked official images finding their way onto the web, Italian car maker Fiat has officially revealed its new Fiat 500 Abarth hot hatch.

Set to make its first public appearance at the Geneva Motor Show next month, the Abarth represents a high-performance edition of the outrageously popular Fiat 500.

The Abarth’s new 1.4-litre 16v petrol turbocharged engine delivers a maximum 99kW at 5500rpm and peak torque of 206Nm at 3000rpm in Sport mode, and 180Nm at 2500rpm in Normal mode.

Like the original Fiat 500 upon which it is based, the Abarth variant will fully comply with future Euro 5 emissions standards.

It has also adopted the new TTC (Torque Transfer Control) system, which improves the transfer of drive torque to the wheels, but, above all, ensures that the car behaves impeccably on bends, making it safer and more entertaining even with a sporty driving style.

Fiat planning a convertible for the 500

Fiat 500 is one of the most decorated cars, it has a long list of awards including the European COTY award. The model is about to get another trim, Fiat has confirmed that a convertible version of the 500 is on the anvil and could be unveiled this summer.

Details on the convertible version are scarce, but engineers at Fiat will have to work overtime to ensure that the model does not loose the class leading five-star Euro NCAP occupancy rating. This in turn implies that Fiat may well go with a Targa trim for enhanced protection in the new model.

Fiat 500 wins European Car of the Year award

Fifty-eight journalist from twenty-two countries around Europe have voted the Fiat 500 as "European Car of the Year 2008" with 385 votes, ahead of the Mazda 2 (325 votes) and the Ford Mondeo (202). The cute subcompact was also in 57 of the 58 short lists and was voted first by jury members.

Fiat has won already this award 12 times: Fiat 124 (1967), Fiat 128 (1970), Fiat 127 (1972), Lancia Delta (1980), Fiat Uno (1984), Fiat Tipo (1989), Fiat Punto (1995), Fiat Bravo/Brava (1996), Alfa 156 (1998), Alfa 147 (2001), Fiat Panda (2004) and the Fiat 500 (2008).

The 500 is quite a success: up to date, 105,000 orders have been placed in Germany and Italy. The diesel version is including a Diesel Particullate Filter as a standard, and all engines satisfy the Euro V.
