2011 Skoda Fabia Combi Review

With the series Škoda Fabia, Škoda Auto has established a solid foundation for its portfolio of five cars. The roots of urban families are evident everywhere. The bold lines and elegant exterior design to its smallest components, the Fabia is attentive to the details of Skoda through simple, smart and innovative. And now, in the spring of 2010, the Skoda Fabia has been completely revised with a new face and a greater emphasis on energy efficiency and comfort. The extent of his technical innovations, goes far beyond a facelift.

The new Škoda Fabia Combi and Škoda Roomster will also get the bold new look both inside and outside as well as many technical changes under the skin. But while they look may have changed the character of this multi-talented couple has not. With a capacity of 505 liters of luggage with the rear seats up and 1,485 liters with them flat, Škoda Fabia Combi continues to provide the kind of trunk that goes beyond what is normally offered in this class. Meanwhile, Skoda Roomster, with its highly versatile in the back seat VarioFlex still meets the requirements of families and working people alike. The new Škoda Fabia RS also premieres at the Paris Motor Show 2010 Geneva for the first time, more athletic of the Skoda Fabia is available as an estate. Its combination of high-performance 132 kW (180 hp) and low fuel consumption of only 6.4 km itres/100 marks it as a leader in its class.

These variants of the series Škoda Fabia, Škoda Auto offers a wide range of models in the segment of small cars to meet virtually any customer requirement.

The front features a completely redesigned strong horizontal forms that visually lower the Škoda Fabia, despite its size is unchanged. The Fabia is now much more dynamic, but does so without compromising comfort. "With this reorganization any component escaped our attention," describes the development executive Eckhard Scholz, the major overhaul. The reason behind the new design lies in the range of new, state of the art and often turbocharged engines that began in the Škoda Fabia, including a two-device loaded. Major changes in the engine program is it necessary to rebuild the front Skoda Fabia and therefore the possibility of Lev his face was taken. The bumpers and support, forms headlights, hood and front floor space - nothing is shared by the old Škoda Fabia.

The new grille and headlights in three dimensions to define the look of the new Skoda Fabia, its horizontal lines to emphasize the width of the front panel. "The proportions seem much more relaxed," says Head of Audi design, Jozef Kaban. Her new face is more secure and dynamic, but also more elegant and mature, now uses an emotional level.

Despite the re-design of the virtues Škoda now has not been forgotten. The visor-like window surface which rotates in the cabin has always been a central part of the Skoda Fabia, and will remain so. Alternative complementary to paint the roof has been maintained.

Thank you to the new headlights back on the wings, like the side profile is extended, while Škoda Fabia Škoda brand lamps have elegant C-shaped graphics. All of these features that the new Fabia continues to illustrate the brand.

New alloy wheels and aluminum design with a new color options for the Rally Green, Aqua Blue and Pacific Blue, head of the reform of the smallest Skoda. The sedan version of the Škoda Fabia is now also available with roof rails for the first time. Lightweight design and attention to detail to keep the weight at just two pounds.

Inside, the cabin is enhanced by new materials and visual enhancements. Chrome inserts for ventilation, gearshift and handbrake button frame to carry the high quality of Skoda Fabia. The new three and four branches are covered in leather and with an optional audio control multi-function and telephony systems. Seat covers breathing and attractive upgrade Climatronic air conditioning controls are the new Skoda Fabia car the feel of a much higher class.

Driver information display has also been redesigned, the central screen now features a shift indicator, which makes a significant contribution to greater fuel economy. On versions with selected speed DSG gearbox, while the constant display of outdoor temperature on the center screen is an important safety feature. The function of the speed control and speed limit warnings show the speed limit in countries with higher speed limits on roads and in vehicles with speed restrictions due to winter tires.

The old monochrome arrow graphics inspired by the navigation system Škoda Fabia is now replaced by advanced system Amundsen larger Skoda. It is equipped with a five-inch touch screen, SD card reader and a connection point for external memory devices. Another Mobile Device Interface (MDI) for use with iPod, Aux-In, USB and mini USB are also available and is in the glove compartment below. This replaces the old CD changer.

GSM phone preparation is also new. The system is capable of maintaining two different Bluetooth connections simultaneously via streaming audio. This means you can call using the speakerphone while listening to the music of an additional external source. The two connections can be operated via buttons on the Multi-function leather steering wheel. The voice command is activated by a button on the multifunction steering wheel, leather-wrapped steering wheel or in the case of Comfort II GSM phone.

Range of the new Škoda Fabia improved engine is at the center of all innovations. A total of seven petrol and three diesel engines are available. Power outputs of 44 kW (60 hp) to 132 kW (180 hp) gasoline engines, while diesel units delivering between 55 kW (75 HP) 77 kW (105 hp). All engines meet Euro 5 emissions standards exhaust offer fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions therefore extremely low. All cars with manual transmission includes a gear selection indicator to promote efficient driving. An arrow on the dashboard screen insert suggests when to change gears to keep the engine in its most efficient speed range.

As in the rest of the Škoda family, the engine range is determined by the art of downsizing. Displacements are supplemented with significantly reduced turbo-charging and double billing and high-precision direct injection of fuel to achieve the optimum combination of performance and fuel consumption. Turbo-charge significantly increases the levels of torque, especially in gasoline engines, while the pulling power of the diet is much lower than conventional engines, naturally aspirated. The power unit of the Škoda Fabia range is the petrol engine four cylinder in the Skoda Fabia RS. Although capable of only 1.4 liters, double revenues through a turbocharger with wastegate and a movable mechanical compressor ensures that the power is 132 kW (180 hp) while peak torque is 250 Nm from the same impressive 2000 rpm to 4500 rpm. Although muscular performance, combined consumption of just 6.4 l/100km is and CO2 emissions are 148 g / km.

But the performance was not the only development objective. Environmentally, the sound operation, and thus engines set new standards in the Škoda Fabia. When connected to the evolution DSG seven-speed direct optimized - the new 1.2 TSI engine of 77 kW (105 hp) offers exceptionally low running costs. The fuel consumption of just 5.3 liters of fuel per 100 km (53.3 mpg) and CO2 emissions of just 124 g / km is unusual for its performance. The 1.2 TSI, offered in two performance levels - 63 kW (86 hp) 77 kW (105 hp). The two are combined with a five-speed manual transmission as standard smooth.

Engine improvements and the reduction of friction and the adoption of lightweight construction also increase efficiency. For the 1.2-liter three-cylinder, a new weight reduced crank shaft has been developed, which is 1.7 kg lighter than its predecessor. Resources are also stored in the production: casting is a collection kg lighter than before, and there are less production waste.

Diesel engines offer a wide range of performances from 55 kW (75 HP) 77 kW (105 hp), with capacities of 1.2 and 1.6 liters. All are equipped with a diesel particulate filter and high-pressure injection through a common rail system. With an injection pressure of 1,600 bars is reached, and fast response piezo injectors allow up to five injections per cycle, the refinement of the engine has been improved considerably and there is a drastic reduction in fuel consumption and emissions of gases exhaust. Additional cleaning of exhaust gases is achieved by an oxidation catalyst and recirculation of exhaust gas in all versions of the series of diesel Škoda Fabia.

An area of development has been a reduction in noise levels in the two petrol engines 1.2 HTP three cylinders. Instead of the supply chain arm of normal guy, a toothed chain was chosen, the three parts of the chain elements drive more smoothly and quietly on the gears. This creates significantly reduces the noise current, especially during the operation exceeded three-cylinder engines, especially at high revs, which were previously considered to be unpleasant. The noise level thanks to the range most frequently used rev, between 1600 and 3400 rpm is also clearly reduced.

Series motors of the new Skoda Fabia:

HTP/44 * 1.2 kW (60 hp) - EU-5 (not Roomster)

* 1.2 12V HTP/51 kW (70 hp) - The EU 5/EU2

* 1.4 16V/63 kW (86 hp) - EU 5

TSI/63 * 1.2 kW (86 hp) - EU 5

TSI/77 * 1.2 kW (105 hp) - EU 5

* 1.6 16V/77 kW (105 hp) - The EU 4/EU 2

* 1.6 16V/77 kW (105 hp) (A) - EU 4/EU 2

TSI/132 * 1.4 kW (180 hp) - EU-5 to RS

* 1.2 TDI CR DPF/55 kW (75 hp) - EU 5/EU 4

* 1.6 TDI CR DPF/66 kW (90 hp) - EU 5

* 1.6 TDI CR DPF/77 kW (105 hp) - 5 EU

A number of security systems to ensure the safety of all passengers in the Skoda Fabia and other users. Four airbags protect occupants in all Škoda Fabia, while the other two options. ABS with Brake Assist is also standard equipment and, in many markets, the PSE, which now includes tire pressure warning hill or assistant, is also mounted.

The new lighting system is designed to provide glare is a great unit and a reflector or projector are installed. Light energy efficient set in the system is integrated into the new dual chamber fog lights, roughly halve the energy consumption. This technology also allows better illumination of the road in the fog.

In emergency braking situations - 7 m/s2 over 60 km / h - brake lights or hazard lights flashing at a frequency of 3 Hz to warn following traffic. If, after an emergency braking, the speed is less than 10 km / h and the deceleration is less than 2.5 m/s2, the hazard lights come on with their normal cycle (1.25 Hz) to warn the following drivers.

To increase security, Skoda Fabia windows can be controlled via the remote control button. This can close the windows when you leave the car or open a window at a distance to cool the interior when parked in full sun.

In any case, the anti-theft system in the new Fabia will be even stronger. A new generation immobilizer protects the new Škoda Fabia most effective against theft.

Mechanically, a larger brake servo is the new Skoda Fabia more responsive when braking thanks to the large cylinder. This allows a quicker and, above all, the considerable delay.

Along with the finely tuned racing machine, four-wheel independent suspension - McPherson and triangulation and a torsion beam in the rear - as well as excellent crash safety body, the Skoda Fabia offers more extensive protection and comfort than ever before.

Skoda descends on Switzerland with a Yeti

Skoda Yeti

Europeans are about to get one more soft-roading cute 'ute to add to their shopping lists now that Skoda, Volkswagen's Czech subsidiary, has released the production version of the Yeti at the Geneva Motor Show. First shown in concept form back at the 2005 show in Geneva, the production Yeti keeps the same basic design as its conceptual forebear, but we think it loses some of what made it so interesting in the first place.

Gone is the contrasting white roof that was obviously cribbed from Toyota's FJ Cruiser but looked perfect in this application. So too gone are the flanks, now smoothed out and looking very first-gen Honda CR-V-ish and missing the hidden rear door handles from the concept.

Inside, the Yeti features the same innovative seating arrangement as the Roomster, featuring three separate rear buckets that can individually slide fore and aft or be removed completely. Gas and diesel-powered engines ranging from 1.2 liters to 2.0 liters will be offered with up to 170 horsepower along with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive. Expect sales in Europe to begin later this year.

Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI

It takes a lot of confidence and a very straight face to call your new car the Superb. In the Thirties, Skoda used the name on a luxury saloon, but when the Czech firm’s Volkswagen Passat-based executive appeared wearing the same badge in 2002, the world did a double take. For a company that had only just shaken off its cheap and not-very-cheerful image, this seemed rather ambitious to say the least! But the Superb sold well. Now, six years after it arrived, a replacement is here.

Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI-1Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI-2And it’s a luxury saloon with a difference – a full-size hatchback with a boot that opens separately. The rear hatch has electro-mechanically locking hinges halfway along its length. On the bottom edge are two buttons. The one on the left pops the bootlid, but if you press the other first and wait for the high-level brake light indicator to stop flashing, the left-hand button opens the entire hatchback. It sounds contrived, but works fairly well when access via the bootlid is re-stricted, even if it is slow to operate.

Elsewhere, the Superb mixes old and new Passat platforms, plus parts from the current Octavia. The big news is that Skoda expects to sell a high proportion of 4x4 variants, so the rear axle comes from VW’s 4MOTION system. The two-wheel-drive versions also get a new axle which is claimed to produce a quieter, more comfortable ride.

It’s a not particularly distinguished-looking car, but inside the Superb is classy with smooth soft-touch plastics, a well organised and designed dash, and lots of cubbies in the front.Room in the rear is very generous, with more leg space than you’d ever need and thoughtful touches such as umbrellas that slot into the doors, a trick inspired by Rolls-Royce’s new Phantom. Headroom in the back is fine for anyone up to six feet tall.

Air-con is standard, while up to nine airbags and electronic stability control bolster safety. The Superb also debuts VW’s optional adaptive lighting system. As well as illuminating round corners, it extends the beam spread at low speed and increases the range as the pace picks up.

Three petrol engines will be on sale from launch: 123bhp 1.4 and 158bhp 1.8 four-cylinder units, plus a 256bhp 3.6-litre V6. There will also be three four-cylinder turbodiesels: a 103bhp 1.9, 138bhp 2.0 and a 167bhp 2.0-litre. The most powerful oil-burner is the latest twin-cam, four-valve, common-rail powerplant from VW, as used in the new Audi A4.

Skoda thinks that the single-cam, 138bhp turbodiesel option will be the most popular. It comes with six-speed manual or optional six-speed twin-clutch DSG semi-automatic. Either gearbox works well with the refined engine, which provides brisk acceleration and low noise.

Skoda’s Superb Estate revealed

Czech giant Skoda is set to join the space race with an eagerly anticipated estate based on the huge Superb. Our exclusive image is the best indication yet of how the new car will look when it’s officially unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October. Crucially, it’s the first time that Skoda has offered its flagship Superb line-up with a load-lugger.

Skoda’s Superb Estate -1Skoda’s Superb Estate -2And our spies caught engineers testing a blue proto-type, which uses the Octavia bodywork to disguise its longer platform and higher roofline. This is the first proof the firm is working on a rival to the Volvo V70.

Inside, the Superb Estate will offer even more load space than the hatch, which has an innovative ‘double opening’ tailgate, as revealed in Issue 1,003. As a result, the newcomer should be one of the class’s largest carriers.

It will be virtually the same length as the standard Superb, measuring around 4,850mm. But because it’s taller and benefits from a revised rear bench, the estate promises far greater load-lugging ability. Drivers will have the choice of six VW-sourced engines: three petrols and three diesels.

Entry-level models get the 105bhp 1.9 TDI oil-burner, while the flagship will take power from a 3.2-litre V6 delivering 260bhp. Five and six-speed gearboxes will be available, although bosses have also hinted that a slick-shifting, six-speed semi-automatic – based on Skoda parent company VW’s DSG transmission – will also be offered shortly after the car is launched.

Speculation has been rife that the marque will introduce a four-wheel-drive version of the latest-generation model, but Skoda has not yet provided official confirmation of this. The Superb Estate is due to go on sale in UK showrooms early next year, and buyers can expect to pay a premium of around £1,500 over the hatchback. That would see the entry-level Classic version start from about £15,500.

2008 Skoda Octavia Comparo - Petrol vs. Diesel

The Octavia Elegance’s fabulous 2.0 litre TDI (Turbocharged Direct Injection) diesel engine. With 103kW and an impressive 320Nm available it’s an athletic performer, quiet and strong with enough pep to shame larger capacity petrol rivals. Torquey, linear acceleration comes freely after the inital lag which although minimal, is nonetheless noticeable and can be slightly obtrusive in peak hour traffic.

2008 Skoda Octavia Comparo -12008 Skoda Octavia Comparo -2The DSG automatic does a fine job of keeping things on the boil once you’re up and moving, and is always in the right place at the right time. No hunting, minimal thinking, and short direct shifts make for smooth flowing power that works seamlessly to the input from your right foot.

Over the longer country stretches the diesel is a brilliant performer, it overtakes effortlessly and eats up mile after mile without so much as a hint of losing steam, but that initial turbo lag may become distracting to many drivers meaning this car is truly at its best cruising on the highway where lag issues are of little relevance.

The combined fuel consumption average for the week returned a decent 6.6 litres / 100km all up, slightly over the ADR test results of 6.0l and it’s worth noting that even under rigorous stop-start conditions, the TDI still managed to return a maximum of high 8s.

The petrol model was turbo-charged which gave us a much more flexible drive from a smaller capacity engine. Lay off the throttle and you’ve got all the economy benefits of a smaller capacity four cylinder, but stick the boot in and that punchy turbo springs to life, with surprising and effortless performance.

2008 Skoda Roomster Comparo-12008 Skoda Roomster Comparo-2The funky Skoda Roomster is no stranger to the CarAdvice office having been reviewed by Karl some months ago. So rather than review it again, I used the Roomster as a little science project to help solve the most important conundrum of the modern age – petrol versus diesel.
My first guinea pig was the petrol variant, in this case the Roomster Style 1.6 litre four-cylinder. The double overhead cam sixteen valve engine revs rather freely and like most petrol engines, develops the majority of its motivation higher in the rev range.

The multi-point injection set up helps develop a rather smooth 77kW which is on board at 5,600 rpm, just shy of the red line. Coupled with a somewhat lack luster torque figure of 153Nm @ 3,800rpm the figures don’t really do a lot to inspire a would-be buyer, at least on paper.

Fortunately for the petrol Roomster the transmission is its saving grace, which is why I chose to review the automatic. In my opinion it does a better job than the manual when mated to this particular petrol engine, and made for a fairer comparison to the TDI model.

The six-speed automatic (with sport mode and tiptronic style shifter – floor mounted) adapts itself to your driving style and very quickly learns how best to react to throttle input selecting the required gear to keep Roomster moving at a respectable pace.

Moving on to the diesel now, the Roomster Style TDI comes in one guise only, the slightly higher capacity 1.9 litre five-speed manual. The single overhead cam eight valve turbo charged oiler manages 77kW, just like its petrol brother, though the power comes on sooner - 4,000rpm due to the low revving nature of a diesel engine.

2008 Skoda Fabia Estate Launched

Skoda announced that the 2008 Fabia Estate has been launched in the United Kingdom. The 2008 Skoda Fabia Estate is priced from 9,360 pounds, for the 1.2 HTP 12v 70bhp version, to 13,775 pounds for the 1.9 TDi PD 105bhp version.

Skoda Press Release:
Skoda’s new Fabia Estate is on sale from Thursday the 7th of February.

2008 Skoda Fabia Estate The compact load lugger, which costs between £9,360 and £13,775, not only represents great value for money but is also supremely practical thanks to its 1,460-litre stowage potential.

Insurance groupings that start as low as 2E for the 1.2 HTP (70bhp) Fabia Estate 1 and a whopping 60mpg combined (1.4 TDI 80bhp), should also help keep running costs to a minimum.

Skoda’s network of nearly 130 retailers is expecting big demand for the new model. Over 30,000 examples of its predecessor were sold between 2001 and 2007 and the 2008 version looks set to do even better.

Skoda Superb

Worthy and reliable as it shall doubtless be when it goes on sale in the UK this autumn, the new Skoda Superb isn't the easiest car to get excited about.Especially when it looks, well, not vastly different to the current Superb.

Skoda SuperbSkoda Superb-2But wait. Because round the back of the humble Superb lurks a technological innovation that could change the face - or at least the arse - of motoring. And that innovation is called Twindoor.

Patented by Skoda, Twindoor is a nifty tailgate that allows you to open just the bootlid to load small items, or the entire hatch - including the rear window - for bigger stuff. Which, we guess, makes the Superb half saloon and half hatch. A haloon, perhaps. Or a satch.

Still not enthused? Well, how does a 3.2-litre V6 tickle your fancy? Still nothing? Touch-screen DVD? Flappy-paddle gearbox? No? Fine, be apathetic. But don't come crawling to us when you've got an awkwardly shaped flat-pack wardrobe that won't fit into the back of your saloon.

Skoda Ffabia Brisk

Brisk by name, brisk by nature is all the introduction you need for this one-off Skoda Fabia.

Skoda Ffabia BriskSkoda Ffabia Brisk 2Skoda Ffabia Brisk 3The RS01 WRC packs a breathed-on version of the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine found in the Octavia vRS.

When the engine hits its peak of 494bhp at 7,800rpm, the RS01 hits 62mph from rest in 2.7 seconds.

The car has been built by Czech spark-plug manufacturer Brisk (geddit?), which fancied doing something a bit different to promote its wares.

The company has not just lopped off the rear of the roof for the coupe lines, it has fitted the RS01 out to full WRC spec and says it will use the car on a few selected rallies.

Underneath the body lies the four-wheel-drive system from a factory Fabia WRC machine, while rally guru Prodrive has been called in to help with final fettling.
