2011 Scion XD Hatchback

2011 Scion xD Hatchback review

Unlike his brothers and sisters living in the xB TC 2011 Scion xD a life of relative obscurity. Maybe it is because this economy sedan has a style of mind more calm, or perhaps because of its focus on robust and reliable transportation. Admittedly, this is nothing to sniff. But these days most competitors offer much more than simple transportation.

To their credit, the xD has a 1.8 liter engine and brave, one of the most powerful of its kind, and good manners, whether in city or highway. It also has many standard features and can be equipped with more than 40 dealer-installed options. This extensive list of customization options is one of the highlights of the xD is, the range of options includes everything from buttons to move the parties to suspend performance.

Scion xD RS 3.0 also offers as part of his series of current versions, a limited edition xD equipped with a four-piece kit that includes a body side skirts front rocker sill skirts and a rear spoiler fiber carbon and moldings. Rear passengers will appreciate the xD is tilting / sliding rear seat, which is a rarity in this segment. Another factor to remember when considering an xD-Scion is not bargain prices.

But these days, many other sedans offer even more competitive. The Ford Fiesta has a more attractive driving experience, better fuel economy and the innovative Ford Sync, while the Honda Fit Sport offers more passenger space and utility. Kia Soul is another solid choice, like the Nissan Cube Nissan Versa peculiar and well equipped. The 2011 Scion xD is a worthwhile, but these days you can get a much more fun to go with safe transportation.

Body styles, trim levels and options

The Scion xD 2011 four-door hatchback comes in two trim levels: base and launch of the 3.0 series.

Standard equipment on the xD base includes wheels 16-inch steel with a choice of three covers, air conditioning, cruise control, full power accessories, tilt steering wheel with audio controls and a system Pioneer six-speaker CD/MP3 audio with iPod / USB connection and an RCA subwoofer output.

Available in one color ("Xpresso"), the launch of the series 3.0 adds improvements to the exterior finish, including a body kit carbon fiber accents and an individually numbered plaque production. The production of this board is limited to 1500 units.

Although the xD is not available with factory-installed options, a long list of updates can be installed at the dealership. Available options include a navigation system, a premium audio system, Bluetooth, satellite radio, illuminated door sills and TRD performance parts.

Propulsion and Performance

A 1.8-liter engine powers four-cylinder 2011 Scion xD, put its 128 horses and 125 lb-ft of torque to the ground using a five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic transmission. Just compress the xD to 60 km / h in 8.4 seconds in the test faster than Fit with about one second. XD Fuel economy is only average for a subcompact, but: 27 mpg highway mpg and 29 mpg city/33 combined with either transmission.

Security

The 2011 Scion xD has antilock brakes with brake assist, stability control, seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and active headrests.

The 2011 Scion xD has not yet been evaluated using the new government, the more difficult of 2,011 crash tests. According to his notes in 2010 (which are not comparable with 2011 points) xD card received four stars for frontal impacts and five stars for side impacts perfect. The Insurance Institute for Highway crash tests of safety, the xD was "acceptable" (the second highest score) in the frontal offset and "Good" (highest rating) in side impacts.

In braking tests, the order of 60 mph xD in about 123 feet impressive.

Interior Design and Special Features

XD interior is cool and minimalist, all shades of dark gray and matte metal. Entertainment and logically controlled air conditioning to the center console is a nesting area for mobile phones and iPod (USB / AUX door neighbor). XD cluster size is a curious project, divided into three sections confusion speedometer / tachometer share the same pod round. How Speedo needle rotates clockwise, tach needle rises to the opposite hemisphere.

The optional Alpine audio with six speakers and a touch screen that mimics the functions of an iPod, which is a nice touch. The Alpine system is also available with a navigation system. Scion Option Alpine navigation system combines a multimedia package with 7-inch screen, Bluetooth, audio outputs of the amplifier connections and a security camera.

XD is sitting upright, but larger drivers may suffer from a shortage of the legs, aggravated by a steering column that telescopes. Settlement is generous, however, and rear passengers can enjoy the space with a large reclining seat and sliding. However, compared with its competitors, xD stiffs in the cargo space. Its 35.7-cubic-foot 42, bins Honda Fit (and clever fold-flat on the ground), and more than 50 blocks offered in the Nissan and Kia Soul Cube.

Driving Impressions

In 2011 Scion xD will not make you take the long way home, but its 1.8-liter engine offers a rare zest for this segment. The electric power steering feels artificially controlled at low speeds, but it is quite accurate and a good weight in the corners. While touring around the city is consistent and comfortable, the downside is that the xD is not your first choice for aggressive swing. If you want to hire a disc, it is not - but if your priorities are elsewhere, should lead character xD satisfactory.

Chicago 2010: Scion tC Release Series 6.0

Scion tC Release Series 6.0

Take a good look at the Scion tC Release Series 6.0... it's kind of a big deal. Last year, Scion offered up 2,000 tC Release Series 5.0 models. This year, the new Release Series 6.0 will be almost twice as rare, with just 1,100 such models planned for production. Better get yourself in line now.

To recap, this special tC comes painted up in Speedway Blue, which looks even more like Chrysler's classic B5 Blue in person than it does in pictures, along with some very Challenger-esque flat black stripes. So, what we have here is obviously a pint-sized muscle car, right? Well, not exactly. With the same exact 161-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine as all the other tCs sharing roadways, muscle isn't really in this car's vocabulary.

It's not all bad news, though. The 200-watt Alpine audio system with iPod/USB jack and 4.3-inch GPS touch screen do come standard for the car's $18,620 (with a stick, or $19,420 with an automatic) asking price.

Scion tC Release Series 5.0

Scion tC Release Series 5.0

As we told you last week, Scion is taking advantage of this year's Chicago Auto Show to drop yet another tweaked Scion tC, just like they did last year. This year's example is the 2009 Scion tC Release Series 5.0, of which 2000 examples or fewer will be built.

One thing that makes this Release Series more interesting than some of its predecessors is the fact that Scion's modifications go beyond new paint and wheels. Besides the gloss black paint and red-lined, matte black, 18-inch wheels, parent company Toyota has added virtually everything in their TRD parts catalog. RS 5.0 gets lowering springs, a rear sway bar, a sport muffler and special badging, and there's also an optional rear lip spoiler.

The interior features the same blacked-out TRD theme, with a leather-covered steering wheel, black seats and TRD-badged floor mats. To keep it from being too dark and depressing, the seats feature red inserts and stitching. Best of all, this TRD-infused package will add just $2,300 to the base price of the standard tC. Expect to see the new tC arriving in dealers beginning in March.

SEMA 2008: Scion concepts aplenty

Scion concepts aplenty

This is Scion's fifth year as a SEMA attendee, and it's arguably their best. Being the younger, hipper, tunier Toyota it makes sense they show up here with six concepts to spark customers' imaginations. To that end, they've brought several fun and outrageous customs from designers such as Mark Arcenal, Eddie Hahm (above), Drag Cartel, John Pangilinan, Rogue Status, MV Designz, Raging Bull, Blaine Fontana, Kenton Parker, Jeff Soto, and Christian Rado.

There are three xBs, an xD and a few tCs in the official booth alone. Scion distributed three tCs to customizers for the 2008 Scion Tuner Challenge, with the winner to be announced during SEMA. Our absolute favorite is the one done up by Eddie Hahm of "Fast Eddie's Garage" fame. He took it retro and created an homage to a time when hot rodding meant more than mounting dubs and a bodykit. Fatlace founder Mark Arcenal dreamt up a DTM racer, while John Pangilinan made an even more butch looking tC with his widebody design. Personally, we really enjoyed the most elaborately detailed model, the Ruthless Cartell xD with its completely chopped roof, but it's strictly for show. The trucklet xDt was pretty novel too. Check out the gallery and pick out your favorite.

2009 Scion tC Review

If you want a recipe for a strong-selling car for the coveted 20-to-30-something demographic, ask Scion. Take a solid platform with a well-tuned suspension and a strong engine, add in plenty of standard features such as 17-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, a sunroof and a nice stereo, wrap it all up in a smartly attractive coupe-styled body and give it bargain pricing, and you have the 2009 Scion tC.

Having a sense of balance is always a good thing, and the Scion tC exhibits that virtue by providing fairly athletic handling along with a compliant ride. Rather than a high-winding engine that requires a lot of revs to extract the performance, the tC employs a big-for-the-class 2.4-liter four that furnishes strong low- and midrange power.

2009 Scion tC-12009 Scion tC-2Another ace in the tC's hand is its relatively upscale cabin and accommodating rear seat. The former features high-quality materials and tight build quality, while the latter has enough room for two adults, a rare luxury in the compact sport coupe segment.

Although the 2009 Scion tC is well equipped, there are still a number of dealer-installed accessories, including a choice of wheels, body kits, stereo head units and interior accents, that can tailor the car to your tastes. Should you hunger for more excitement, your friendly Scion dealer can also hook up your ride with a supercharger that boosts horsepower up to 200 and puts the tC in closer competition against the Civic Si coupe, Mini Cooper S and Volkswagen GTI. Be forewarned that the supercharger is rather pricey, especially when you factor in the cost of having it installed at your Scion dealer.

In its basic form, however, the tC still represents a solid pick for an under-$20,000 sport coupe. True, it's not going to be able to keep up with the aforementioned competitors in a straight line, and its overall design is now a bit dated, having come out for 2005. But for hatchback or coupe shoppers wanting a little bit of everything without paying too much, it would be foolish to overlook the 2009 tC.

Scion Hako Coupe concept

Toyota’s niche U.S. manufacturer, Scion, has come out with what can potentially be called, the world’s ugliest - ever- concept car. Say hello to the Scion Hako Coupe concept. Taking its inspiration from the Scion xB, which is a bad place to start, the Hako Coupe is supposedly a play on the growing interest in vintage American styles in Japan. Scion has put Japanese design into American vintage style and, well, it has created a monster.

Scion Hako Coupe concept-1Scion Hako Coupe concept-2The high roof is connected to a flat windscreen, which according to the company is “ready to attack the road”, what that actually means is beyond us. Perhaps after the attack the car might look better? Then there is the trapezoidal LED headlights and taillights which look like they were designed by a mad man. At least we like the deep 18-inch wheels. We also like the massive panoramic glass roof that lights up the interior with natural light. The rest of the interior is an attempt to blend orange and black in every way imaginable.

The gear shifter is a joytstick and there is a big engine start button on the steering wheel. The entertainment system is out of pimp-my-ride with two dash-mounted video screens with Bluetooth connectivity to upload music and videos.

But it gets better, there is a monitor on each door which, wait for it, display images from cameras set below the A-pillar. After the car has stopped, the images can be downloaded to a PC to form a pictorial album of the journey!

Thankfully, Scion has no plans to turn this concept into a production model.

2008 Scion Hako Coupe Concept

2008 Scion Hako Coupe

Scion unveiled today at the New York Auto Show the Hako Coupe, a concept developed by Tokyo Design Division. The Hako Coupe Concept was inspired by the iconic xB and the emergence of American vintage style among young Tokyo trendsetters.

Tokyo Design developed the Hako Coupe with classic American coupes in mind. The car’s geometric profile conveys a powerful stance in a compact and bold package. Its trapezoidal LED headlights lie parallel with a large and aggressive, rectangular upper grille. The lower rectangular grille anchors the front fascia and continues to communicate the Hako’s aggressive attitude. Round fog lights, symmetrically placed high on the front bumper, have integrated turn signals.

The Hako Coupe features a vertical windshield as the concept sits upright and ready to attack the road. A high linear beltline along with a blackened and chopped greenhouse seamlessly wrap around the rear to provide a mysterious profile. As an example of potential personalization, the concept is equipped with a flat, panorama roof that features a random, barcode-like pattern that can be seen on the exterior and from the interior.

Inside, the Hako is accented with orange and metallic detailing that exudes a modern environment with entertainment possibilities. The front and rear seats are covered with urethane and rubber-like upholstery for easy cleaning. The contemporary front bucket seats flow to the floor and incorporate a geometric design on the seatback. The seats are separated by a center console that features a large storage crevice for storing magazines, cell phones, and other small items. Two cockpit-like rear seats also share a storage crevice.

Press release

Scion unveiled its Hako Coupe Concept vehicle at a press conference today at the New York International Auto Show.

Scion’s Hako Coupe was developed by Tokyo Design Division, which studied global, youth-inspired trends. Japanese and American youth cultures often influence each other and are interpreted with a unique twist. The Hako Coupe Concept was inspired by the iconic xB and the emergence of American vintage style among young Tokyo trendsetters.

"Scion’s Hako Coupe Concept embodies a distinct global perspective on today’s youth," said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president. "This type of forward thinking complements the Scion philosophy of intently listening to our customers and being willing to take risks to help us see where our brand should be. We took the xB’s iconic boxy shape and explored something more vivacious, yet just as emotionally appealing. This concept is the sporty version of a box."

The Hako’s silhouette is accentuated by slim, race-car-inspired side mirrors that also feature integrated turn signals. Powerful, flared fenders add dimension and contrast to the concept’s boxy shape and smooth surface planes. The Hako concept hugs the road with custom 18-inch deep dish five-spoke wheels and tires with a "Scion" custom tread.

As an example of potential personalization, the concept is equipped with a flat, panorama roof that features a random, barcode-like pattern that can be seen on the exterior and from the interior.

The rear features LED taillights that echo the shape of the headlights. To complete the package, the rear bumper has an integrated fog and back up light on the left and exhaust on the right.

The front and rear seats are covered with urethane and rubber-like upholstery for easy cleaning. The seats are separated by a center console that features a large storage crevice for storing magazines, cell phones, and other small items. Two cockpit-like rear seats also share a storage crevice.

The orange driver’s seat has a gaming theme. Instrumentation and warning lights cascade from the art inspired instrument panel to the steering wheel. The shifter, located on the center console, resembles a large joystick. On the steering wheel is a simple button to start the engine and a track-ball type control for the Hako’s entertainment system located on the passenger dash. The entertainment system consists of two video monitor screens mounted on the dash for radio, video, and music capabilities. Users can upload their videos and music through a Bluetooth® connection. The front passenger controls the system using a large rollerball mounted on the center of the dash. A black seat differentiates the front passenger area.

Video monitors located on each door and on each side of the rear seating area project distorted fish-eye images from orange filtered cameras mounted beneath the A-pillars. While the vehicle is parked the driver and passenger can edit the scenes captured by the cameras to show their friends where they have been and perhaps even post the clip online for others to see.

"As you know, polarizing style fits in well with our lineup," said Hollis. "And of course we love a good box. We’ll listen to the feedback from this concept to help us determine how our brand could evolve and grow over the next five years."

Scion tC Series 4.0

Toyota won't be having much in the way of new models at next week's Chicago Auto Show, but its hip urban sibling will be showing off a new version of the tC. The Scion tC Release Series 4.0 RS (whew) ups the style quotient of the base model with a DAMD body kit, new upper grille and rear spoiler, all coated in Galactic Gray Mica.

Scion tC Series 4.0The interior benefits from a leather-wrapped steering wheel, black leather and dark wood RAZO shift knob and gray and black seats swathed in Alcantara with "tC RS 4.0" embroidered into the front and rear seats.

All that extra kit comes at a $2,700 premium (an extra $285 if you want the spoiler too), with the automatic model coming it at $20,500 and the manual-equipped version for $800 less. Both prices don't include the $620 destination charge. Only 2,300 examples will be available when sales begin this March.

2008 Scion xB

If you're an automaker and you're planning the successor to the iconic vehicle that all but singlehandedly created your new youth division, there are a couple of different routes you can take. For its second-generation Scion xB, Toyota could have ditched the box-on-wheels concept altogether in favor of something as fresh and as different as the xB was when it bowed in 2003. Instead, it concluded that the xB is the Scion brand, in much the same way that the 911 is Porsche. So Toyota reshaped and stretched the xB's sheetmetal while retaining the essence of the box, and it's underscoring the point with a hipster marketing scheme called "Want2BSquare." And did we mention that it increased power by half?

2008 Scion xB2008 Scion xB-22008 Scion xB-3With a 55-hp boost courtesy of the tC coupe's 158-hp, 2.4-liter four, the new xB feels a lot torquier than the 2007 model but only a hair faster. No wonder: it gained a whopping 605 pounds, because it's a foot longer and three inches wider, and it rides on a wheelbase that's four inches longer. The standard manual transmission's vague gearshifter hardly makes the most of the available power, and even if you opt for the Toyota Racing Development (TRD) short-throw shifter, rowing through the five-speed gearbox is like churning butter.

Cabin ergonomics are top-notch. Naturally, the stereo is ready to blast the contents of your iPod, and the premium audio system's auxiliary inputs make it easier to add more equipment.

There will be those who can't stomach the xB's weight gain or its bigger, softer-looking exterior. But with a package this good starting at only sixteen grand, Scion needn't worry about finding enough people who want 2B square.
