Daihatsu electromobiles

Maybe, it is difficult to believe in it, but Daihatsu actively sells the cars in 37 countries of the world. The spectrum of products is various enough: from cabriolet Copen to seven-seater version Terios. Daihatsu Materia

Definitely from Daihatsu's cubist period, the new Materia is all straight lines and right angles. But we like it.

With function dictating form, the Materia is a box on wheels to give maximum interior space, and Daihatsu says the Materia is as big as a family car inside while being the same sort of size as a supermini outside.

The engine is Daihatsu's straightforward 1.5-litre petrol with 103bhp, driven through either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox.

The Materia goes on sale in July with a standard equipment list that includes air conditioning, CD player, alloy wheels, privacy rear glass and four airbags.

All that, plus the stand-out styling from £10,995 looks pretty attractive to us.

Daihatsu Trevis Car

There are two ways to think about the new microsite for the Trevis, a chic minicar from Daihatsu: Someone in the Japanese company's marketing department is either extremely ahead of the curve or has gone around the bend.

Daihatsu TrevisIf you look at www.my-trevis.de and get past the half-naked guy getting jiggy with it, you may find more shocking options inside, like a guy sending you warm kisses or another one showing you his nice hat. You see, Trevis is first and foremost a name and it seems Daihatsu decided to put a face behind the car. This may not be everyone's idea of a good time, but it is certain to get attention.

The Web site also has the usual automotive site features: Visitors can learn about the virtues of the Trevis, choose colors and browse through spec sheets. The Trevis is powered by a three-cylinder 1.0-liter engine, capable of 58 horsepower, and aimed squarely at the market where the Lancia Ypsilon is the latest fashion accessory.

Daihatsu Xenia

Daihatsu is the maker of China's best-selling passenger cars, yet the Japanese company has lacked a presence of its own in the world's biggest auto market. This is about to change.

Daihatsu XeniaBack in the mid-1980s, Daihatsu struck a licensing deal with Tianjin Xiali, a then-new automobile manufacturer, which resulted in the Chinese production of the Daihatsu Charade. This agreement has long expired, but Xiali, which now belongs to the country's biggest auto company, FAW, is still the best-selling brand in China. And its main products are still based on the old Charade.

Once Toyota made huge inroads into China, it was inevitable that its microcar specialist subsidiary, Daihatsu, would gain a foothold. The right moment came at Auto Shanghai 2007, where Daihatsu introduced its Xenia minivan, which will be produced at the FAW Jilin factory.

The Xenia, which was originally available in ASEAN markets, is a seven-seat minivan powered by 1.3- and 1.5-liter four-cylinder gas engines. It will retail for $9,100 to $13,000 in China.

FAW Jilin plans to set up a national network of dealerships and after-sales operations. Daihatsu's target is 30,000 units of its new model sold in 2008.
